The 10 Best Movies in Theaters Right Now

There are still various highly-anticipated movies to be released this year, and a couple of them can be enjoyed on the big screen right now. 2023 has been a great year for cinema, with some huge box-office hits like Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and titles that have earned a spot among the best movies in recent years. 2023 has seen a variety of exciting titles hitting theaters, from highly-anticipated horror movies like The Exorcist: Believer to drama movies like Oppenheimer and even some rom-coms like My Big Fat Greek Weeding 3.

With Halloween fast-approaching, fall has seen the release of a couple of horror movies, though it has also welcomed movies from other genres, such as Gareth Edward’s sci-fi movie The Creator and the animated movie PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie. Although a couple of horror movies are still playing in theaters, this week is also seeing the release of Martin Scorsese’s most recent project, along with a Western drama starring Nicolas Cage.

10 Killers of the Flower Moon

Based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of the members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma, who were murdered under mysterious circumstances after oil was found on their land, prompting an FBI investigation. The wealth of the tribe immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, stole, and extorted as much Osage money as they could before taking extreme measures to secure their own needs. Killers of the Flower Moon was released on October 20, 2023.

9 Butcher’s Crossing

Butcher’s Crossing is a Western drama movie based on the 1960 novel of the same name by John Edward Williams. Butcher’s Crossing is the story of an Ivy League dropout who travels to the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that ends up putting his life and mental health at risk. Butcher’s Crossing was released on October 20, 2023.

8 Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is a concert film documenting Taylor Swift’s highly successful 2023-2024 Eras Tour. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour depicts the 10 different acts of the tour and includes the performances of all the songs from the tour’s standard setlist, except for “Wildest Dreams”, “The Archer”, “Invisible String”, “Cardigan”, and “This the Damn Season”. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was filmed in August 2023 at three shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California (with permission from the SAG-AFTRA as it happened amidst the strike), and its unconventional release strategy led studios to move some of their October releases in order to not clash with it. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was released in theaters on October 13, 2023.

7 The Exorcist: Believer

The Exorcist franchise has now joined the trend of requels with the legacy sequel The Exorcist: Believer, a direct continuation of William Friedkin’s 1973 classic, The Exorcist. The Exorcist: Believer follows Victor Fielding, a single father whose daughter, Angela, and her friend Katherine, start showing signs of demonic possession. Of course, this unleashes a chain of horrific events that lead Victor to look for help, and the only person alive who has witnessed anything like what is happening to these girls is Chris MacNeil. The Exorcist: Believer is the first in a new trilogy, with a sequel, titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, planned for an April 18, 2025, release. The Exorcist: Believer was released on October 6, 2023.

6 When Evil Lurks

When Evil Lurks is a horror movie written and directed by Demián Rugna. Set in a remote village, two brothers – Pedro and Jaime – find a demon-infected man who’s about to give birth to evil itself. Although they decide to get rid of the man, the brothers don’t succeed at stopping the chaos he brought. When Evil Lurks was released in theaters on October 6, 2023.

5 The Creator

Gareth Edwards’ latest sci-fi project, The Creator, is now playing in theaters. Set in a future where humans and the forces of artificial intelligence are at war, The Creator follows Joshua, an ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife. Joshua is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the architect of an advanced AI who developed a mysterious weapon powerful enough to end the war but also humanity itself, too. However, Joshua and his team discover that this powerful weapon is an AI in the form of a young child. The Creator was released on September 29, 2023.

4 Saw X

Saw X is the tenth installment in the Saw film series, but it’s set between Saw and Saw II, thus being a sequel and a prequel. Saw X follows John Kramer, who, desperate for a cure for his cancer, travels to México for a risky and experimental medical procedure that could finally cure him. Unfortunately, the entire operation turns out to be a scam, so Kramer sees a chance to continue his work and make the scammers pay for what they have done to him and many others. Saw X was released on September 29, 2023.

3 Expend4bles (2023)

The Expendables are back with a fourth movie. Simply titled Expend4bles (or The Expendables 4) and directed by Scott Waugh, it follows the team as they are assigned on a mission to stop Suarto Rahmat (Iko Uwais), the leader of a terrorist organization, from smuggling nuclear warheads that will unleash a conflict between Russia and the U.S. Originally planned to be released in 2022, Expend4bles finally arrived in theaters on September 22, 2023.

2 A Haunting in Venice (2023)

The world-renowned Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, is back with a new mystery in A Haunting in Venice, the third film in the Hercule Poirot movie series. Loosely based on Agatha Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, A Haunting in Venice is set in post-World War II Venice. Poirot is now retired and living in his own exile, but he reluctantly agrees to attend a séance – however, when one of the guests is murdered, it’s up to him to find out who the killer is. A Haunting in Venice was released on September 11, 2023.

1 Dumb Money (2023)

Dumb Money is a biographical comedy-drama movie directed by Craig Gillespie and based on the 2021 book The Antisocial Network, by Ben Mezrich, which chronicles the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021. Dumb Money follows a group of rag-tag investors from a Reddit page called r/WallStreetBets who banded together to put the squeeze on, at least, two hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall. After a couple of reschedules, Dumb Money got a limited theatrical release on September 15, 2023, and will expand to a wide release on September 29, 2023.
