You know what they say—once Kelly Clarkson sings your song, you no longer own it!

The queen of covers treated fans to a new rendition of her own, 20-year-old hit on the latest edition of Kellyoke, establishing new ownership of “Behind These Hazel Eyes”—Kelly’s version—in a move that fans are describing as her “Kelly Clarkson[ing] her own song.”

The superstar took the stage in her New York City studio dressed in a casual ocean-themed blouse paired with a denim maxi skirt, where she belted out the “Kellyoke classic,” much to the delight of her audience.

She lowered the key a bit, sounding to some viewers like she was “singing the harmony vocals” rather than the melody, but those present in the studio didn’t skip a beat.

“That was crazy, so many people I could have just handed the microphone to,” she said after the fact. “I could see you singing every lyric.”

Fans were eager to hear her re-record the 2005 hit, along with several others from her earlier albums.

After all, Clarkson was the one to first suggest that Taylor Swift should rerecord her first six albums—something the “Karma” songstress still thanks her for with each new album rerelease—so it only makes sense that fans would want a “Breakaway (Kelly’s Version) for the 20th Anniversary.”

“Oh she should re-record this,” one commenter suggested eagerly, while another called for someone to layer the new version over the old to hear her harmonize with herself.

“How did she make her own song even better?” another questioned before agreeing, I need this re-recorded.”

“Even her own song she can still make it sounds [sic] better 🥰🥰,” another comment read.

It’s not often that the talk show host incorporates her own music into her regular Kellyoke segment, but when she does, she easily “outranks herself,” over and over.
